What Brad Stevens Shared About Celtics Draft Pick Hugo Gonzalez

Celtics Select Hugo Gonzalez in 2025 NBA Draft

In a surprising move during the 2025 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics selected 19-year-old Hugo Gonzalez from Madrid, Spain, with the 28th overall pick. Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Brad Stevens, expressed enthusiasm for Gonzalez, praising his potential despite a modest average of 3.4 points per game this past season with Real Madrid. "We’ve been watching Hugo for a long time… He’s tough, hard-playing, and has all the intangibles of a winning player," Stevens noted.

Gonzalez joined Real Madrid in 2022, competing on both the U18 and professional teams, where he trained alongside former NBA talents like Serge Ibaka and Guerschon Yabusele. Stevens believes this experience has equipped Gonzalez with vital skills and a competitive edge, crucial for his development as a young player. "He’s played with adults for a long time… it’s great when you get to play on those teams," he stated.

The Celtics plan to bring Gonzalez to Boston immediately to help him acclimate, although it remains uncertain if he will participate in the upcoming Summer League. Stevens emphasized, "We were really excited that Hugo was available at 28," signaling hope for the rookie’s future impact on the franchise.
