Canadian Man Dies in U.S. Immigration Custody in Miami
MIAMI (AP) — Johnny Noviello, a 49-year-old Canadian national, died in federal custody on Monday at the Bureau of Prisons Federal Detention Center in Miami, according to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announcement. The cause of death is currently under investigation.
Noviello entered the United States in 1988 on a legal visa and became a lawful permanent resident by 1991. However, he was convicted of drug trafficking and other offenses in 2023, resulting in a one-year prison sentence. Following his release, he was apprehended by ICE agents at his probation office last month and faced charges that could lead to his removal from the U.S. due to his criminal record.
Noviello is the eighth immigration detainee to die in federal custody this year, marking a troubling trend with a total of 11 deaths reported in 2024. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of his death as questions regarding detainee welfare and safety in custody persist. The community and supporters are seeking clarity on these incidents as calls for reform in the immigration system grow louder.
