RFK Jr.’s Vaccine Promises: An Overview of His Actions

Health Secretary Kennedy’s Shift on Vaccines Draws Scrutiny

Date: June 27, 2025

By The Associated Press

In a striking divergence from his confirmation statements, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is facing criticism for actions regarding vaccine policies that contradict established scientific protocols. During Senate confirmation hearings, he pledged to uphold vaccine science and not impose personal beliefs, stating, “I’m not going to substitute my judgment for science.”

However, since taking office on February 13, Kennedy has initiated significant changes in how vaccines are evaluated and approved. In a commitment to the childhood vaccination schedule, he assured Senator Bill Cassidy he would support existing CDC recommendations, calling the polio vaccine "safe and effective." Yet, he subsequently announced intentions to investigate the childhood vaccine schedule linked to diseases like measles and polio.

Tensions escalated when the National Institutes of Health suspended studies aimed at improving vaccine trust and access. Kennedy’s May report raised questions about vaccine mandates and called for more rigorous clinical trials, sparking backlash for citing non-existent studies.

Under Kennedy, the CDC recently relaxed guidelines for COVID-19 vaccinations in children and pregnant women, a move criticized by public health experts. He has also dismissed the advisory panel responsible for vaccine recommendations and appointed new advisers, including individuals associated with vaccine misinformation.

Moreover, Kennedy enforced a controversial personnel shakeup at the FDA, leading to the resignation of its top vaccine official amid fears of data manipulation. Now, the FDA is shifting focus, limiting COVID-19 vaccine approvals primarily to older adults and individuals at high risk—markedly reversing previous recommendations for broader vaccinations.

Kennedy’s actions raise alarms about the direction of public health policy under his leadership, and they represent a critical moment in the ongoing national conversation about vaccination and public health.
