Why the Celtics Chose Amari Williams: An ‘Elite Rebounder’

Celtics Select Amari Williams with No. 46 Pick in NBA Draft

BOSTON – The Boston Celtics made a significant move during the 2025 NBA Draft by acquiring the No. 46 pick in a trade with the Orlando Magic, which also included pick 57. Choosing Amari Williams, a standout center from Kentucky, the Celtics are banking on his impressive collegiate performance to bolster their roster.

Standing at 7 feet tall, Williams showcased his versatility last season with averages of 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. Notably, he recorded 10 double-doubles, showcasing his capability to make an immediate impact on both ends of the court.

“Amari has been one of the best passing big men in college for a long time,” stated Mike Zarren, the Celtics’ vice president of basketball operations. “His elite rebounding skills, coupled with his exceptional vision, make him a prime asset in today’s NBA.” With a remarkable wingspan of 7-foot-6, Williams is poised to create mismatches in the paint.

The Celtics plan to utilize Williams on a two-way contract as they look to integrate him into their dynamic roster, which currently includes 13 contracted players for the 2025-26 season. Alongside first-round draft pick Hugo González, Williams brings a fresh energy to the team. While some analysts suggest he can enhance his perimeter mobility, Zarren emphasized Williams’ strong playmaking instincts, stating, “Amari should fit into our system well, especially since we often play through our big guys in the post.”

With Williams on board, the Celtics are looking to refine their offensive strategies and reinforce their playoff aspirations for the upcoming season.
