Disgraced Former Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson’s Sentencing Delayed Until September

Judge Delays Sentencing for Disgraced Ex-Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson

A federal judge has granted Tania Fernandes Anderson, the former Boston City Councilor convicted of public corruption, a delay in her sentencing, now scheduled for September 5. The request for a 30-day postponement was made by her attorney to provide the probation office more time to examine additional documents related to her case.

Fernandes Anderson, 46, pleaded guilty to two felony charges—wire fraud and theft concerning a federal program—stemming from a kickback scheme involving a $13,000 bonus to a relative on her staff. The transaction, which occurred in a City Hall bathroom in June 2023, is linked to her struggle with financial difficulties. Federal prosecutors are recommending a one-year prison sentence and $13,000 in restitution, as well as the seizure of her assets if she cannot pay the restitution.

Additionally, the judge approved a modification allowing her to travel outside Massachusetts to assist with her infant grandchild in Rhode Island. Fernandes Anderson, who became the first Muslim American and African immigrant elected to the City Council, resigned on July 4, leaving her position vacant as an election approaches for her successor in November.
