Press Release: Beach Closures Across Massachusetts This Weekend Due to Safety Concerns
As beachgoers plan their weekend getaways, they should be aware that 25 beaches across Massachusetts are closed as of Saturday. The Massachusetts Department of Health (DPH) reports that most closures are attributed to elevated levels of bacteria in the water, stemming from sources such as stormwater runoff, leaking septic systems, and wildlife waste. Additionally, four beaches remain closed due to harmful cyanobacteria blooms, while Walden Pond State Reservation’s main beach will stay closed until summer 2025 for renovations.
The DPH conducts water testing to ensure safety, with results typically available within 24 hours. Beaches will remain inaccessible until bacteria levels drop to safe standards. Swimming in contaminated waters can lead to various health issues, including gastrointestinal, respiratory, and dermatological symptoms.
Beach visitors can still enjoy activities like sunbathing, playing sports, or collecting seashells, even if swimming is off-limits. The DPH emphasizes community responsibility in maintaining beach cleanliness by disposing of waste properly and not feeding wildlife.
