Counselor Reinstated Amid Controversy Over LGBTQ+ Comments
Amherst, MA — July 21, 2025
A former guidance counselor at Amherst Regional Middle School, Delinda Dykes, has been ordered reinstated with back pay following her dismissal in 2023. Dykes faced allegations of misgendering transgender students and infusing her religious beliefs into counseling, including a controversial remark about an “LGBTQ gay demon.” The claims were highlighted in a student investigative piece by The Graphic, which prompted scrutiny of her and fellow counselors, Hector Santos and Tania Cabrera.
Following a two-pronged investigation by the school district, Dykes was terminated, but later contested her firing. An arbitrator found the district had violated state law regarding employee dismissal, leading to her reinstatement. Amherst-Pelham Regional Public Schools Superintendent Dr. E. Xiomara Herman noted procedural deficiencies in the case and emphasized the need for accountability and transparency moving forward.
While Dykes and her colleagues deny wrongdoing, the community remains divided. Herman urged residents to respond with understanding, using this moment to reinforce systems that protect student rights and uphold professional conduct.
As the district complies with the arbitrator’s ruling, it continues to address concerns surrounding inclusivity and equity in educational practices.
