Alivea Goncalves Honored at Bryan Kohberger Sentencing

Bryan Kohberger pled guilty to the murders of four University of Idaho students—Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—who were brutally stabbed to death in November 2022. The plea deal spares him from a trial and the possibility of a death sentence, resulting in four consecutive life sentences plus an additional 10 years for felony burglary.

In a dramatic courtroom session, Alivea Goncalves, Kaylee’s older sister, addressed Kohberger directly, expressing her anger rather than grief. She chastised him for his actions and competence, stating, “You’re pathetic,” and mocking the revelation that he left his DNA on a knife sheath, which was critical evidence against him. Alivea highlighted Kohberger’s perceived foolishness, declaring him a “sociopath” and “murderer.” She also expressed how her sister and her friends would have treated him kindly had he approached them differently, emphasizing their sense of community.

During the hearing, other family members reinforced their outrage, describing him as “evil.” Kaylee Goncalves’ father, Steven, confronted Kohberger, asserting that the attention was on the victims, not him, and that no one cares about Kohberger’s fate. Kristi Goncalves, Kaylee’s mother, labeled him a “joke” in the courtroom, suggesting he looked like a clown in his jumpsuit.

At least one family member expressed a sentiment of forgiveness, but many firmly stated they could never forgive him. Throughout the proceedings, Kohberger exhibited no visible emotion as the victims’ families shared their grief and loss. The sentiments echoed a collective outrage at his actions and the impact on their lives.
