Fenway Workers Threaten Strike Over Contract Dispute
Workers at Fenway Park, represented by UNITE HERE Local 26, are poised to strike if their employer, Aramark, fails to secure a labor agreement by noon on Friday. Over 1,000 workers, including those at the adjacent MGM Music Hall, could walk off the job, marking the first strike at Fenway Park in its 113-year history. Union President Carlos Aramayo criticized the current wages, with starting positions at minimum wage ($15/hour) rising only to around $18. He emphasized the need for fair compensation, particularly since similar roles at other Boston venues offer between $26 and $28 per hour.
Additionally, workers are concerned about increased automation at the park, which has reduced staffing and, subsequently, tips. Longtime worker Charbel Salameh highlighted that automated beer stations have led to fewer interactions with fans, impacting earnings and making it difficult to enforce age restrictions on alcohol purchases. The union has urged fans to refrain from purchasing food and drinks in solidarity.
While Fenway ownership remains hopeful for a swift resolution, players have expressed support for the workers. The situation continues to unfold as negotiations remain critical ahead of the upcoming weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
