Massachusetts Hits $8 Billion Milestone in Marijuana Sales
Massachusetts has officially surpassed $8 billion in marijuana sales since retail sales began in 2018, as reported by the Cannabis Control Commission (CCC). This significant milestone was reached on June 28 and comes just seven months after the state celebrated exceeding the $7 billion mark. Notably, sales saw record-breaking monthly figures in January, April, and May of this year.
CCC Executive Director Travis Ahern expressed confidence in the growing cannabis market, stating, "The Commission is glad to see the Commonwealth achieve another adult-use cannabis sales milestone." He emphasized the public’s trust in the regulated market’s safety and security.
Among cannabis products, marijuana flower remains the most favored, generating approximately $338 million in sales from January 1 to July 6. Following closely are vape products, which brought in $168.8 million, and pre-rolled joints at $116.4 million.
In 2025, the CCC has issued 40 new operation notices, pushing the total number of licensed retail establishments to a record 754. An additional 63 licenses have been granted this year to businesses yet to open.
The state’s cannabis sales have proven lucrative for revenue, contributing an estimated $1.6 billion in tax revenue, comprising a 6.25% state sales tax and a 13.75% excise tax. Revenue collected in fiscal 2025 through late May increased to $264 million, up $12 million compared to the previous fiscal year.
Looking ahead, the CCC plans to introduce "social consumption" licenses later this year, akin to pot cafes in Amsterdam. Ahern anticipates that this new licensing category will further stimulate economic growth in Massachusetts.
