Seven individuals have been arrested in Alabama for their alleged involvement in a child sex trafficking ring that exploited children as young as three. Bibb County Sheriff Jody Wade announced during a press conference on July 23 that ten children, aged between three to fifteen, were victims of this horrifying operation, which is believed to have started around 2022 and was based in a storm shelter bunker behind a home in Brent, roughly 50 miles from Birmingham. The bunker, equipped with a toilet and mattress, was concealed by a carport and reportedly used to detain and abuse the children.
Wade described the situation as unprecedentedly horrific in his 33 years of law enforcement, noting that there’s a concern regarding possible connections to a gang known for child trafficking. The victims often faced physical restraints, and authorities suspect drug use to render them compliant.
The arrested suspects include several who are related to the victims. Their charges range from first-degree rape and sodomy to human trafficking and kidnapping. Noteworthy among the arrested are William Chase McElroy and Dalton Terrell, facing multiple serious charges related to rape and trafficking.
The investigation began in February when local human services alerted authorities to potential abuse. The abused children have since been removed from the home and are receiving counseling and support services. Sheriff Wade emphasized the long-lasting impact of such trauma, stating, “You can’t heal from this, but you can move on as best you can.” The investigation remains ongoing, with the possibility of more victims and arrests anticipated.
