Massachusetts Gubernatorial Candidates Spar Over Attorney General’s Spending
In Massachusetts, the spending habits of Attorney General Andrea Campbell are igniting a political clash between Republican gubernatorial hopefuls Mike Kennealy and Brian Shortsleeve. Kennealy, a former cabinet secretary under Governor Charlie Baker, criticized Shortsleeve for being one of Campbell’s significant donors, claiming his opponent’s contributions of $2,000 have raised questions about Shortsleeve’s integrity.
Records reveal that Shortsleeve, a venture capitalist and ex-MBTA administrator, donated $1,000 each in August 2021 and March 2022 to Campbell, who won office in 2022. Kennealy highlighted these donations following a report showing Campbell spent nearly $300,000 on state-issued procurement cards, or P-cards, in the last fiscal year, which included significant expenditures for a conference in France.
In response, Shortsleeve’s political strategist, Holly Robichaud, defended the contributions, likening them to business tactics used by high-profile figures like former President Trump, and criticized Kennealy’s past voting record. The heated exchange reflects ongoing tensions as both candidates seek to position themselves favorably to voters amid scrutiny of their financial strategies and campaigns. The campaign heads into an increasingly contentious phase as both candidates prepare for the upcoming election season.
