Bright Red Trump Sculpture Surfaces in Manhattan, Sparks Controversy
New York, July 26, 2025 – In a surprising artistic twist, a life-size red sculpture of former President Donald Trump, titled "Donald," was installed by French street artist James Colomina at a Midtown Manhattan intersection this week, capturing the attention of passersby and local media.
Positioned strategically at the corner of East 42nd Street and 2nd Avenue, the striking installation features a serious-looking Trump emerging from a manhole, donning a suit and tie. Colomina, known for his provocative red sculptures, described the location as significant, stating it symbolizes the place where Trump constructed his brand. “I wanted this image… to disturb that landscape,” he remarked to USA Today.
The red statue, which took three weeks to craft in France before being disassembled and reassembled in New York, also included a small red rat peeking out from under the manhole cover. The installation faced the iconic Chrysler Building, creating a stark contrast between the symbols of power and the grotesque figure rising from the sewers.
Colomina captured the moment on Instagram, commenting, “Make America Grime Again,” a play on Trump’s famous slogan. However, the sculpture was quickly removed by a maintenance worker, illustrating the transient nature of street art.
In response to the installation, White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson dismissed the artwork, quipping, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
James Colomina, who has installed similar works in cities like Tokyo and Paris, aims to provoke thought and reflection through his art. His “Colomina Red” signature symbolizes urgency and passion regarding the issues he addresses.
This unexpected appearance in the heart of Manhattan serves as a stark reminder of the intersection of art, politics, and public space.
