Baseball Icon Ryne Sandberg Passes Away at 65

Chicago, IL – Baseball legend Ryne Sandberg has died at the age of 65, a loss felt deeply within the sports community. The Chicago Cubs, Sandberg’s former team, confirmed his passing on July 28 via X, stating, "With great sadness, we share that Ryne Sandberg has passed away today," accompanied by a heartfelt photo of the athlete. The cause of death remains undisclosed.

Sandberg had previously revealed his battle with metastatic prostate cancer in January 2024, declaring himself cancer-free months later. However, he shared in December of that year that his cancer had returned and progressed.

Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts honored Sandberg’s legacy, noting, "Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Cubs fans…His dedication to and respect for the game were hallmarks of his career." Ricketts also highlighted Sandberg’s pride in his family, calling him a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

A second baseman who played the majority of his 16-year career with the Cubs, Sandberg was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005. He made a significant impact on the field, earning nine Gold Glove awards and being named National League MVP in 1984. In 1990, he showcased his prowess with 40 home runs, leading the league.

Despite his success, a World Series title eluded him during his playing days. Reflecting on the Cubs’ struggles, he expressed hope for a championship, which finally came in 2016 after a 108-year drought. By then, Sandberg had returned to the Cubs as an ambassador, receiving an honorary World Series ring.

Sandberg’s legacy endures, not only through statistics but as an embodiment of integrity and pride for the game of baseball.
