Angela Lin, a 29-year-old Google software engineer, tragically lost her life during a hiking accident at Yosemite National Park on July 19. While hiking along the Tuolumne Grove paved trail with her boyfriend and two friends, attendees reported hearing a cracking sound from above, shortly before a large branch fell, striking Lin. Despite immediate CPR efforts by her boyfriend and park rangers, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident has raised concerns about safety on popular trails, prompting Lin’s family to seek answers from park officials regarding trail maintenance and the management of potentially hazardous trees. A spokesperson for Lin’s family expressed frustration over the lack of communication from park authorities and urged them to improve safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Lin joined Google in April 2022, after stints at Salesforce and an internship at Microsoft. She was well-educated, holding a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and both a master’s and Ph.D. in computer sciences from the University of Texas at Austin. In a statement, Google expressed condolences over the loss of their team member, highlighting Lin’s respect and contributions.
Following the accident, the Tuolumne Grove trail was closed for a week while the incident was investigated. As Lin’s loved ones navigate their grief, they continue to call for enhanced safety measures within national parks to protect visitors from unforeseen dangers. The National Park Service and the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office have been contacted for further comments regarding the incident.
