Healey Slams Texas GOP’s Redistricting Efforts as a “Partisan Power Grab”
Boston, MA – Governor Maura Healey condemned Texas Republicans’ ongoing attempt to redraw U.S. House maps, labeling it a “partisan, craven political power grab” that could significantly affect elections in Massachusetts and beyond. During a press conference at the State House, Healey criticized Texas leaders, including Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton, while showing solidarity with Texas Democratic lawmakers who have left the state to block the proposed redistricting.
Healey stated that changes in Texas could reverberate nationally, affecting crucial issues such as Medicaid and hunger programs, which have already seen repercussions from former President Donald Trump’s policies. “What’s happening in Texas matters… it hurts all Americans,” she noted.
The Texas Democrats, emulating a now-familiar tactic, have exited the state to deny their Republican counterparts a quorum necessary for a vote on new district maps, which are projected to create five additional Republican seats. Abbott and his allies have responded with threats of fines and potential arrests, further escalating tensions. State Rep. Anna Hernandez mentioned facing a $500-per-day fine but asserted that her focus remained on ensuring constituents’ voices are heard.
Abbott defended the redistricting initiative, arguing that it reflects the political makeup favoring Trump supporters in Texas. However, Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin warned that the actions in Texas could undermine voter rights across the nation, with long-term implications for federal legislation impacting all Americans.
Senator Carol Alvarado, one of the Texas lawmakers actively involved in protest efforts, emphasized the widespread nature of this issue, asserting, “This is a United States of America problem.” The confrontation over redistricting continues to spotlight the fragile balance of power, as both parties gear up for the 2026 midterm elections.
