Red Sox Rookie Marcelo Mayer on Injured List as Recovery Progresses Slowly
SAN DIEGO — The Boston Red Sox are facing a challenging situation as rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer remains sidelined due to a sprained right wrist. Placed on the 15-day injured list on July 25, the 22-year-old has yet to begin baseball activities. Following an anti-inflammation injection received on August 2, Mayer was expected to resume baseball-related training after 72 hours, but he has only been engaging in workouts without hitting, throwing, or fielding. While surgery is a possibility, Mayer is currently attempting to recover without going under the knife.
In 44 games this season, Mayer has struggled at the plate, boasting a batting average of .228 with a .272 on-base percentage, four home runs, eight doubles, and 10 RBIs. His performance showed signs of improvement in the nine games leading up to his injury, where he recorded a .296 batting average.
In other injury news, Red Sox reliever Luis Guerrero has made progress in his recovery from a right elbow strain, having thrown a successful bullpen session in Fort Myers. Manager Alex Cora noted that while a detailed schedule for Guerrero’s return has yet to be established, he is advancing in his rehabilitation efforts.
Meanwhile, setup man Justin Slaten is also on the mend from shoulder issues, having thrown two additional bullpen sessions recently. He has been sidelined since May 28 due to inflammation and a pinched nerve in his shoulder but is showing positive signs of recovery.
As the Red Sox navigate these injuries, the team will continue to monitor the progress of their players, hoping for timely returns in their pursuit of a successful season.
