Markey Criticizes Trump on Solar Program: Don’t Let Massachusetts Miss Out | Bay State Briefing

Press Release: Massachusetts Leaders React to Cancellation of Solar Program

U.S. Senator Ed Markey and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed strong discontent over the Trump administration’s recent decision to terminate the $7 billion Solar for All Program, which was set to provide crucial funding for solar energy initiatives across 60 states, including a $156 million allocation for Massachusetts. Markey, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, criticized the administration’s move as "unlawful," stating it would lead to increased energy costs and continued reliance on monopolistic utilities.

Governor Healey echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the program’s potential to deliver affordable energy solutions to residents and create 3,000 jobs. "Solar is the fastest and cheapest way to bring affordable energy into Massachusetts," she stated, asserting that the cancellation would significantly hinder the state’s energy objectives.

The cancellation followed EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin’s announcement that the program would end due to changes in statutory authority stemming from a budget reconciliation bill passed in July. Zeldin argued that the program was a “boondoggle” that lacked appropriated funds, prompting the administration to withdraw support.

The Solar for All Program aimed to provide zero-interest loans, solar panels for public housing, and workforce training, particularly benefiting historically underserved communities. Healey had highlighted its role in boosting solar capacity by 125 megawatts, demonstrating the extensive local impact.

Critics, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, labeled the decision as reckless, asserting the administration is neglecting opportunities to alleviate energy costs for American families. Markey concluded that cutting the program means losing out on billions meant to enhance energy affordability and sustainability, underscoring that this was a clear setback for consumers, the environment, and the economy.
