Massachusetts State Police Chief Reflects on Controversies and the Experience of Being an Outsider

Colonel Geoffrey Noble Reflects on Leadership of Massachusetts State Police Amid Challenges

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Nearly a year into his tenure, Colonel Geoffrey Noble, the first outsider to lead the Massachusetts State Police, has opened up about the department’s tumultuous journey through various scandals and reforms. Significant incidents, including the overtime scandal, the firing of Trooper Michael Proctor, and a tragic death of a trainee at the academy, have heavily impacted public perception of the agency in recent years.

The shift in leadership follows 2020 police reforms allowing Governor Maura Healey to appoint an external candidate for the first time in the department’s history. During an interview with NewsCenter 5’s Ben Simmoneau, Noble reflected on his experiences, expressing surprise at the positive reception from within the ranks. “The biggest surprise is that I have found that the women and men of the State Police understand the moment," he stated, highlighting the department’s willingness to embrace change since his arrival.

Noble, a Rhode Island native with over 30 years in law enforcement, transitioned from the New Jersey State Police to his leadership role in Massachusetts in October 2024, after a brief stint in private security. When questioned about potential resistance to his outsider status, he acknowledged the trepidation that often accompanies organizational change but noted, “I have not met with any specific resistance from anyone.”

As the department continues to navigate its challenges, Noble aims to foster a culture of positivity and reform. Further insights from his interview—including topics surrounding the Proctor scandal and necessary changes at the academy—will be aired Monday at 6 p.m. on NewsCenter 5, promising to shed more light on the future direction of the Massachusetts State Police.
