Army prosecutors charged Sgt. Quornelius Radford with six counts of attempted murder following an incident on August 6, 2023, at Fort Stewart, Georgia, where he allegedly shot five fellow soldiers, attempting to shoot a sixth. Radford’s victim included an “intimate partner,” and he faces multiple counts under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, including two specifications of attempted premeditated murder and four of attempted unpremeditated murder. Additional charges include domestic violence, aggravated assault inflicting grievous bodily harm, and aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon.
The 28-year-old Radford, an automated logistical noncommissioned officer, reportedly used a personal handgun during the shooting at the company operations facility of the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion. He is currently in custody at the Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston, pending trial, as the military system does not utilize cash bail but assesses the risk of flight or harm to others.
Before the shooting, Radford faced personal struggles, including complaints of racism at work and a pending DUI court date. However, Army officials have not provided information regarding Radford’s motives, even as prosecutors suggest that domestic issues may have played a role in the attack.
In a commendable response to the shooting, six soldiers were honored for their decisive actions to intervene and save lives during the incident, highlighting resilience and heroism in the face of danger. The Army’s Criminal Investigation Division has not commented further on the investigation as the case develops.
