‘A Robot Warfare’: Eastern Ukraine Under Attack from Russian Glide Bombs, Rockets, and Kamikaze Drones

Intensifying Drone Warfare Leaves Kramatorsk Residents in Despair

Kramatorsk, Ukraine – The increasing frequency of drone attacks has left residents of Kramatorsk, a city in Donetsk province, grappling with fear and destruction. Amidst the shattered windows and debris from drone strikes, Nataliya Petrovna, a local resident, shared her traumatic experiences, pointing to a new crater created by a Russian Shahed drone. "The attacks are getting worse," she lamented.

Since the recent escalation in hostilities, coinciding with Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the Kremlin has intensified its bombardments. As part of this campaign, Russian forces deployed over 1,000 aerial bombs and nearly 1,400 kamikaze drones in just one week. Experts warn that by autumn, this number could rise to 2,000 drones per day, bolstered by mass production capabilities in Russian factories.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has remained steadfast against ceding any territory, despite increasing pressures from the Kremlin. With Russian troops pushing forward, the Ukrainian government is responding by enhancing its air defense systems, including the procurement of Patriot missiles, although these systems are not cost-effective against drones.

Ukrainian engineers are developing interceptor drones like the “Sting” to combat the aggressive drone campaigns. Early prototypes show promise in neutralizing incoming threats, yet the ongoing technological advancements by Russia pose significant challenges. Residents like Valentina express their determination to endure, despite the chaos around them. "It’s a robot war,” she noted, highlighting the overwhelming power of modern warfare that continues to inflict pain on ordinary citizens.

As Kramatorsk endures relentless assaults, the human cost of this drone warfare becomes increasingly evident, raising fundamental questions about the toll on civilian lives and the future of the conflict.
