A tragic tour bus crash occurred on August 22, 2023, in Pembroke, New York, resulting in five fatalities and numerous injuries, including children. The bus, operated by M&Y Tour Inc., was returning from Niagara Falls to New York City with 54 individuals on board when it overturned on Interstate 90. The bus left the roadway, veered into the median, and then abruptly corrected, rolling off the road onto an embankment. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident, with Erie County Medical Center reporting a surge in trauma patients, marking one of the most severe incidents in recent history for the facility.
Investigators are still determining the cause of the crash, although they ruled out mechanical failure and driver impairment. It is believed that the driver became distracted, leading to a loss of control. The passengers, aged from 1 to 74, hailed from various countries, including the U.S., China, India, and parts of the Middle East. Miraculously, all deceased passengers were adults, and the injured included both adults and children.
Hospital reports indicated varying conditions of the injured, with some receiving treatment at multiple medical facilities. Notably, Buffalo General Medical Center, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Oishei Children’s Hospital, and University of Rochester Medical Center accommodated several victims, ranging from good to serious conditions.
The crash temporarily halted traffic on the interstate and underscores the ongoing concern about the safety of tour bus operations in New York, following previous incidents over the years.
