Springfield Man Convicted of Child Sex Abuse Charges
Springfield, MA – A 45-year-old man, Bairon Ubeda, was found guilty Thursday following a four-day trial for possession and receipt of child sex abuse materials, alongside charges of sexual exploitation of children. U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley announced the conviction, with sentencing scheduled for November 24.
Ubeda was indicted on federal charges in May 2023 while already serving a state sentence for aggravated rape and multiple other offenses related to child abuse. According to federal court documents, Ubeda coerced a 3-year-old child to engage in sexually explicit conduct between December 2018 and February 2019 to create sexually abusive images.
Prior to these charges, Ubeda had a criminal history that included a 2019 conviction for raping a 15-year-old and extorting a woman, resulting in a 10 to 12-year prison sentence imposed by a Hampden County Superior Court judge.
The federal investigation that led to Ubeda’s latest charges highlighted the gravity of his actions, prompting the court to apply stringent legal measures. He remains in custody as he awaits sentencing on these charges. The sexual exploitation of children carries severe penalties, with a mandatory minimum of 15 years and potentially up to 30 years in prison, along with a fine of up to $250,000.
The charges Ubeda faces also include mandatory minimum sentences ranging from five to 20 years for receipt and possession of child sex abuse images. Each charge emphasizes the serious nature of child exploitation crimes, which carry extensive legal ramifications.
Authorities are expected to move forward with Ubeda’s arraignment on the new federal charges unless a plea agreement is reached.
