Rising Fraudulent Spending in State Agencies Sparks Urgency for Fiscal Oversight
Boston, MA — In a troubling escalation of fiscal waste, fraudulent spending across state agencies nearly doubled in the last quarter of the fiscal year, with MassHealth, the state’s Medicaid program, bearing the brunt of the losses. Auditor Diana DiZoglio’s recent report reveals that between April and June, the Bureau of Special Investigations identified 1,153 fraud cases, leading to $4,814,380 in waste—up from $2,465,430 in the third quarter of the year.
MassHealth accounted for a staggering 79.2% of the fraudulent expenditure, skyrocketing from $885,298 in the third quarter to over $3.8 million. DiZoglio emphasized the significance of her findings, stating, “Public benefit fraud can impact the lives of everyday people across Massachusetts,” highlighting the necessity for rigorous oversight to ensure services function correctly for those in need.
Meanwhile, an independent expenditure political action committee (PAC) launched by election advocate Malia Lazu is gaining traction ahead of Boston City Council elections, aiming to boost support for Councilors At-Large Julia Mejia, Ruthzee Louijeune, and Henry Santana. The "We Are Different" PAC seeks to mobilize Black and brown voters through culturally relevant outreach and campaigns. Lazu emphasized the urgent need for progressive leadership to address issues like housing and education.
In Cape Cod, State Rep. Steven Xiarhos is advocating for the replacement of the outdated Sagamore and Bourne bridges, planned for construction in partnership with the Army Corps of Engineers. As plans unfold, he insists that any residents displaced by construction must receive fair compensation amidst growing community concerns regarding the project’s impact.
These developments signal critical shifts in local governance as officials tackle fiscal oversight and community needs amid ongoing infrastructure challenges.
