Press Article: Boston Governor Advocates for WNBA Team Amid Challenges
August 23, 2025
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey is pushing for Boston to secure a WNBA franchise, despite the league suggesting a delay. Collaborating with prominent figures, including outgoing Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca and new owner Bill Chisholm, Healey aims to expedite the potential relocation of the Connecticut Sun to Boston.
In an interview with The Boston Globe, Healey expressed frustration toward the league’s stance, stating, “The league has been saying this is a timing issue and Boston needs to wait, and I don’t believe that Boston should wait.” She contended that Boston already possesses substantial resources in women’s basketball talent, management, and enthusiastic fan support.
Earlier this summer, contention arose when a $325 million deal led by Pagliuca for the Sun’s relocation seemed imminent, with plans for a new $100 million facility. However, developments stalled as WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert did not present this proposal to the league’s board for approval, allowing the Mohegan Tribe, which owns the Sun, to explore other ownership options.
The WNBA has prioritized teams that applied for recent expansions, which Boston did not do. Amid speculation regarding the Sun’s future, the league is reportedly considering purchasing the franchise for $250 million. Healey queried the league’s preference for NBA owners in the WNBA, expressing optimism about new Celtics ownership’s interest in women’s sports.
Healey has been vocal about Boston’s potential as a WNBA host, recently highlighting the city’s strong support for women’s sports, referencing sell-out games at TD Garden. “We are ready for a WNBA team in Boston,” she declared, aligning with her vision that champions women’s athletics in the region.
