Maxwell Caulfield Reflects on ‘Grease 2’ and His Marriage to Juliet Mills
As he prepares to honor his wife, actress Juliet Mills, at this year’s Cinecon in Hollywood, Maxwell Caulfield reminisces about his past roles, particularly in the 1982 musical "Grease 2." Known for his portrayal of the motorcycle-riding Michael Carrington, Caulfield discussed his dynamic with co-star Michelle Pfeiffer, noting their platonic relationship during filming. Unlike the romantic connection shared by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the original "Grease," Caulfield explained that he and Pfeiffer were both newly married and focused on their roles rather than any off-screen romance.
Despite the film’s poor critical reception and box office failure against heavyweights like "E.T." and "Rocky III," Caulfield remained optimistic about his career. He and Pfeiffer formed a bond over the pressures of sudden fame, sharing apprehensions about how stardom could impact their lives. While Pfeiffer quickly ascended the Hollywood ladder, starring in major films like "Scarface," Caulfield’s journey was more challenging. "When the film didn’t take off, I went down with the ship," he admitted, acknowledging the struggle to be embraced by audiences.
Over the years, Caulfield has found solace in theater and enjoyed success with the cult classic "Empire Records," where he played Rex Manning. Currently, he is starring in "The Lost Gospel of Pontius Pilate," but it’s his long-standing marriage to Juliet Mills that he cherishes most. Celebrating over four decades together, he emphasized their strong bond, revealing, "We’ve never gone to bed upset with each other." With admiration for both his wife and the acting profession, Caulfield looks forward to possibly collaborating with Pfeiffer again one day.
