Wilyer Abreu’s Return Delayed, Hampers Red Sox
BALTIMORE — Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu is eligible to return from the 10-day injured list on Thursday, but manager Alex Cora indicated that his comeback may be postponed until next week. Placed on the injured list last Friday due to calf tightness, the 26-year-old is currently in Baltimore with the team, progressing but not expected to play this week. Cora stated, "Hopefully there’s a jump in the upcoming days," hinting at a potential return during the upcoming homestand.
Abreu, who leads the Red Sox with 22 home runs, has a commendable batting average of .253 and ranks fifth in fWAR at 2.7. His overall performance this season includes 69 RBIs, 16 doubles, and a solid OPS of .811 in 108 games. Additionally, Abreu is recognized for his defensive skills, earning him the 2024 Gold Glove award with 13 defensive runs saved over 804 ⅓ innings.
As the Red Sox navigate their busy schedule with four games against the Orioles before an important homestand starting Friday against the Pirates, his absence could significantly impact the team’s performance.
