On August 26, 2023, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the expulsion of Iran’s ambassador to Australia following credible intelligence from the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) linking Iran to antisemitic incidents in Sydney and Melbourne. These incidents included vandalism and arson targeting Jewish places of worship, homes, and community spaces since the onset of the Israel-Gaza conflict in October 2023.
Albanese highlighted two specific attacks: one at the Lewis Continental Kitchen in Sydney and another at the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne. He condemned these actions as dangerous efforts by a foreign entity to disrupt social cohesion in Australia. The situation prompted the Australian government to suspend its embassy operations in Tehran and ensure the safety of its diplomats, who have been relocated to a third country.
The Australian government plans to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization in response to these events. Such measures underscore the commitment to combat antisemitism and maintain social harmony within Australia.
