Iran’s Covert Attacks on Australia’s Jewish Community Exposed
Australia’s domestic spy agency, ASIO, has uncovered credible evidence linking the Iranian government to at least two targeted attacks on the Jewish community in the country. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described these actions as "extraordinary and dangerous" during a press conference on Tuesday.
ASIO’s intelligence points to Iran’s involvement in attacks on Melbourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue and Lewis’ Continental Kitchen. Albanese emphasized that these acts, orchestrated by a foreign government, aim to disrupt social harmony and incite discord within Australian society. He deemed them wholly unacceptable and announced a prompt and firm response from the Australian government.
In a significant diplomatic move, the Iranian ambassador to Australia, Ahmad Sadeghi, will be expelled, and the Australian embassy in Tehran will suspend operations. ASIO’s director-general, Mike Burgess, clarified that while Iran isn’t responsible for all antisemitic acts in Australia, they are investigating other incidents for potential Iranian connections.
Burgess condemned Iran’s actions, highlighting that they not only endangered lives but also threatened to disrupt the social fabric of the nation. He stated that the Iranian regime, along with its proxies, is responsible for instigating these acts of aggression. However, he clarified that no Iranian diplomats in Australia were directly involved, as orders came from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) via intermediaries.
In a further response, the Australian government plans to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, indicating a strong stance against such aggression. The situation remains under close scrutiny, with further developments expected as investigations continue.
