Are the Red Sox Regaining Their ‘Crazy Threat’ After Beneficial Minor League Demotion?

David Hamilton Shines in Red Sox Victory Over Orioles

BALTIMORE — Utility infielder David Hamilton, who made a significant impact in the 2024 season for the Boston Red Sox, is making a comeback as the team navigates its eight-game road trip. Last year, Hamilton stole 33 bases, earned a bWAR of 2.6, and frequently batted second. However, with Trevor Story rejoining the lineup, Hamilton’s playing time has diminished, leading to two demotions to Triple-A Worcester due to a challenging offensive season.

Despite these setbacks, Hamilton showcased his potential during Tuesday’s game against the Orioles, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in the Red Sox’s 5-0 victory. Since being recalled from Worcester, where he regained his rhythm, Hamilton has played in five of six games on the current trip, boasting a .400 batting average with a home run, double, and triple.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora emphasized the value of Hamilton’s recent experience in Triple-A, stating, “He got his rhythm back, and we’re trying to see that continue here.” Hamilton reflected on his time in the minors, noting the difficulties of limited playtime but acknowledging it helped him reconnect with his game.

Hamilton’s elite speed makes him a vital asset, not just offensively but as a strategic pinch runner. Star pitcher Lucas Giolito remarked on Hamilton’s versatility, underscoring the impact he has on the game when performing well.

In Tuesday’s win, Hamilton capitalized on a first-pitch sinker from O’s starter Kyle Bradish, sending it 364 feet to right field to give the Sox a crucial lead. He also executed a sacrifice bunt later in the game to help secure an insurance run. Story praised Hamilton’s hard work and talent, recognizing his ability to leverage this opportunity successfully.

As the Red Sox aim for continued success, Hamilton’s resurgence is a promising sign for the team.
