Recall of 780,000 Ryobi Pressure Washers Due to Injury Risk
NEW YORK (AP) — TTI has announced a recall of approximately 780,000 Ryobi electric pressure washers across the U.S. and Canada due to a serious projectile hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that the capacitors in certain models can overheat and rupture, propelling parts forcefully and posing risks to users and bystanders.
The recall affects models RY142300 and RY142711VNM, with about 764,000 units sold in the U.S. and 16,000 in Canada. Since the capacitors’ issue first arose, TTI has received 135 reports of overheating, including 41 explosions that resulted in 32 documented injuries, primarily affecting fingers, hands, faces, and eyes. No injuries have been reported in Canada.
Consumers are advised to cease using the affected washers immediately and visit Ryobi’s recall website for details on obtaining a complimentary repair kit, which includes a replacement capacitor. These products were available at retailers like Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet from July 2017 to June 2024 with retail prices between $300 to $400. The CPSC’s notice serves as a critical alert to public safety.
