A tent encampment in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis in Gaza was struck in an Israeli attack, resulting in at least 40 deaths and 60 injuries, according to Gaza’s Civil Defence. The area had become overcrowded with Palestinians seeking refuge in tents following Israeli ground invasions. Witnesses described chaotic scenes with fires burning and reconnaissance planes circling overhead.
Rescuers reported finding deep craters at the tent camp and faced difficulty retrieving the bodies of those killed in the attack. Israeli authorities claimed they targeted “significant Hamas terrorists” operating from a command center within the zone, stating that measures were taken to reduce civilian casualties.
Hamas, however, denied that their fighters were present in the area and accused Israel of fabricating excuses for their actions. The group emphasized that they do not use civilian areas for military purposes and condemned the attack as part of Israel’s “ugly crimes.”
The Civil Defence spokesperson called the attack one of the worst massacres in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the devastating impact on the displaced Palestinian population. The international community has been urged to intervene and hold Israel accountable for the violence in Gaza.
