Massachusetts field hockey team chooses to forfeit game instead of playing against a boy

The Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School girls’ field hockey team sparked a debate over Title IX rules by choosing to forfeit a game rather than face a team with a member of the opposite sex due to safety concerns. Superintendent Bill Runey announced the decision to withdraw from the game against Somerset Berkley Regional High School under a new district policy, which allows players and coaches to opt out of competitions if an opposing team includes a member of the opposite sex. The policy was enacted after a female player was injured by a male member of another team in 2023.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) did not change its policy to protect female athletes from boys competing in girls’ sports, citing that students should be allowed to participate in any sport they choose regardless of gender. The MIAA stated that there is no correlation between injuries and mixed-gender teams. The Somerset Berkley Regional School District did not comment on the issue.

The issue highlights ongoing debates surrounding gender inclusion in high school sports and the need to balance safety concerns with promoting fair competition. The decision by the Dighton-Rehoboth team brings attention to the complexities of gender inclusivity in athletics and the challenges faced by athletes, coaches, and administrators in navigating these issues.
