Teamsters Union Withholds Endorsement for Trump or Harris in Presidential Race

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a 1.3 million-member union, has announced that they will not be endorsing either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump for the upcoming presidential election. The union cited a lack of serious commitments from both candidates to prioritize the interests of working people over big business. Despite meetings with both candidates, neither was able to secure the union’s support by agreeing not to interfere in union campaigns or industries, or to honor the right to strike.

Vice President Harris had long courted organized labor and made support for the middle class a key part of her platform. President Trump, on the other hand, also met with the Teamsters and even had the union leader speak at the Republican National Convention. Internal polling within the union showed Trump with an advantage over Harris.

The decision not to endorse either candidate comes just weeks before the election, making it a late move compared to other major unions that have already backed Harris. Teamsters President Sean M. O’Brien stated that the union could not secure the commitments they were seeking from either candidate, leading to their decision to remain neutral in the race.
