Indiana woman admits to hate crime in stabbing of Asian teen

A 58-year-old Indiana woman, Billie Davis, pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime after repeatedly stabbing a Chinese American teenager on a city bus while yelling slurs. The attack left the 18-year-old victim with multiple wounds to her head. Davis admitted to targeting the victim because she was Chinese, saying she wanted to make “one less enemy.”

Following the incident, Trinh Le of civil rights nonprofit Stop AAPI Hate shared that Asian American communities in Indiana continue to grapple with fear and grief. This attack highlights the ongoing issue of racism against Asian American communities, exacerbated by xenophobic and anti-immigrant rhetoric from politicians and leaders.

The guilty plea comes amid concerns from civil rights leaders that the current election cycle could trigger a spike in hate crimes. Reported hate crimes have increased during past presidential election cycles, and there are warnings that this year could see a similar dangerous rise.

Security camera footage from the bus showed the unprovoked attack, where Davis repeatedly stabbed the victim as she tried to exit the bus. The victim sustained injuries requiring sutures and staples on her head. Davis initially argued she was mentally ill and incompetent to stand trial, but after receiving proper medication, her condition improved.

Davis will be sentenced to no more than six years in prison. The incident is part of a larger trend of hate crimes across the country, with reports of violent threats and attacks against various minority groups. As the presidential election approaches, there are concerns that the current climate may continue to fuel hate incidents unless action is taken.
