New Bedford man sentenced to nine months in jail for biting police officer

A New Bedford man, Joseph Nascimento, has been sentenced to nine months in jail after biting a police officer during an arrest. Nascimento, known for his aggression towards authority figures, yelled threats before clamping his jaw down on the officer’s hand, breaking the skin. This incident occurred on June 12, 2023, when police were responding to a domestic violence complaint against Nascimento. Despite being tased twice, he resisted arrest and assaulted the officer, leading to his conviction on charges of resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer. Judge Cynthia Brackett sentenced Nascimento to nine months in jail, adding to his existing year and a half sentence for previous probation violations involving assaults on court officers. Bristol County DA Thomas Quinn described Nascimento as a “career criminal” with no respect for the law or authority figures. The incident highlights the challenges police face when dealing with uncooperative and violent individuals. Despite his actions, the officer involved in the incident provided aid to Nascimento after the attack. Nascimento’s aggressive behavior and lack of compliance with the law have led to his extended jail sentence, reflecting a pattern of disregard for authority.
