Tech mogul Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has released its first transparency report since being purchased by the billionaire. The report reveals that the company has ramped up content moderation efforts, suspending nearly 5.3 million accounts and removing or labeling over 10.6 million posts for rule violations in the first half of the year. Violations included hateful conduct, violent content, and abuse and harassment.
Critics have accused Musk of transforming the once fun platform into a chaotic and toxic environment, with some pointing to his past controversial posts and feuds with world leaders. X is currently banned in Brazil after a dispute between Musk and a Brazilian Supreme Court judge over free speech, far-right accounts, and misinformation.
To enforce its rules, X utilizes a combination of machine learning and human review, with less than 1% of all content on the site found to be violating policies. Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022 was motivated by his belief that the platform was not maximizing its potential as a “platform for free speech.” Since taking over, Musk has implemented significant changes, resulting in an exodus of high-profile users from the platform.
The transparency report sheds light on X’s efforts to tackle harmful content on its platform, but Musk’s influence on the social media company continues to spark controversy and debate among users and observers.
