Major UK train stations experiencing WiFi suspension due to a cybersecurity event | Rail travel

Wifi networks at several train stations across the UK have been suspended following a cybersecurity incident. Nineteen stations, including London Euston, Manchester Piccadilly, and Birmingham New Street, had their wifi services taken down after passengers accessing the wifi were redirected to a webpage containing Islamophobic messages and details of terrorist attacks.

The incident, affecting wifi services provided by Network Rail’s third-party provider Telent, is under criminal investigation. Telent has temporarily suspended the use of Global Reach services, the company that provides the wifi landing page. Other customers of Telent, including Openreach, Transport for London, and the NHS Ambulance Radio Programme, have not been affected.

In London, ten major train stations, including King’s Cross, Liverpool Street, and Waterloo, have been impacted by the suspension. Earlier this month, Transport for London (TfL) suffered a cyber-attack that potentially breached customer details, leading to the arrest of a 17-year-old boy. TfL has been contacting around 5,000 customers as a precaution due to the breach.

As a result of the cyber-attack on TfL’s systems, services like live travel data and customer services were temporarily restricted. The National Crime Agency is investigating the incident, and TfL has not yet restored full access to passenger journey data. Customers are being reassured that once the data is accessible, they will be able to view their full journey history and make corrections if necessary.
