Taunton Mayor Shaunna O’Connell and her husband, Ted O’Connell, have filed court papers requesting the dismissal of criminal charges against Shaunna after an alleged fight between the couple in July. The incident occurred on July 19, when Shaunna allegedly bit and struck Ted with a small crowbar during a heated argument. The police report stated that Ted was verbally abusing Shaunna when she attacked him, and he attempted to leave but she tried to stop him by jumping on the hood of his car.
Both Shaunna and Ted have filed affidavits on September 19, asking for the charges to be dropped. They both stated that they immediately reconciled after the incident and wish for the criminal action to be dismissed. In his affidavit, Ted mentioned regretting involving the police, and both spouses expressed a desire for privacy as they work through their marital issues.
Shaunna, who became mayor of Taunton in January 2020, did not respond to requests for comment on the matter. The couple, who have been married for 33 years, emphasized that they have had challenges like any other couple and are committed to working through their issues. They also stated that Ted would plead the fifth and not take the stand if the case were to go to trial.
The O’Connells’ plea for the charges to be dropped marks a turning point in the legal proceedings following the alleged altercation, emphasizing their desire to move forward from the incident and focus on resolving their personal matters privately.
