Idaho wildfires scorch over 400,000 acres of land

Fires have ravaged nearly half a million acres of national forestland in Idaho, with over a dozen wildfires burning in the state. The Boise National Forest has been hit the hardest, with fires burning over 350,000 acres near the state capital of Boise. Smoke from the fires has led to “very unhealthy” air quality levels in the region, triggering concerns for residents’ health.

One of the largest fires, the Red Rock fire, has burned nearly 70,000 acres in the Salmon-Challis National Forest and is 19% contained. Firefighters are working to prevent the fire from spreading further by burning areas near forest roads and building fire lines. The Garden Fire, about 7 miles north, has burned nearly 10,000 acres with no containment.

Although cooler temperatures over the weekend may help quiet the fires somewhat, state officials have issued an air quality advisory due to smoke particulates causing breathing issues. Children, elderly people, and those with respiratory problems are advised to limit outdoor activities. The smoke is also providing some relief by shading the area and keeping temperatures cooler and humidity higher.

Officials are monitoring the situation and taking it day by day, but residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions to protect their health during this challenging time.
