Former Philadelphia Eagles players Connor Barwin and Jason Kelce are making a splash in the filmmaking world with their latest project, a short documentary titled “Underdogs.” The film highlights the triumphs of the underfunded Vare Gymnastics Team in South Philly, who overcame challenges after the closure of the historic Vare Recreation Center. Directed by Maria Vattimo, the 26-minute documentary showcases the resilience of the gymnastics squad and the City of Philadelphia’s plans for a new recreational facility.
Originally intended as a 10-minute fundraising video, the project evolved into a full-length documentary that captures the impact of the Make the World Better Foundation, which aids in the development of recreation centers in urban areas. Executive producer Kris Mendoza and director Maria Vattimo decided that a documentary would better showcase the community-based efforts of the foundation and the story of the Vare Gymnastics Team.
The film follows the young gymnasts as they navigate competitions and late-night practices on a basketball court floor, showcasing their determination and passion for the sport. Head coach Kristin Smerker expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have their story told on screen. The film, produced by Barwin and Kelce, will premiere at the Philadelphia Film Festival on October 22, giving audiences a glimpse into the world of these talented young athletes.
Barwin and Kelce, who have previously worked together on the documentary “Kelce,” are proud to tell the story of the Vare Gymnastics Team and the importance of coaches and public community spaces for young athletes. The film features gymnasts Cherokee Guido, Elianna Olsen, and Su’Adaa “Susu” Muhammad, and will be showcased at two screenings during the festival.
