Alexandra Eckersley, the daughter of Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley, was given a suspended sentence for abandoning her newborn son in the woods in subfreezing temperatures. The 27-year-old received separate 12-month and 6-month suspended sentences, allowing her to return home as long as she continues mental health treatment. Prosecutors had sought a year in jail, while the defense requested a shorter suspended sentence.
Judge Amy Messer expressed hope that Eckersley would continue on her positive path post-arrest to avoid incarceration. Despite the serious nature of the charges, including falsifying physical evidence and endangering a child, Eckersley was acquitted of two assault charges. Her lawyers explained that she was unaware of her pregnancy due to mental health issues, but has since turned her life around.
Eckersley’s lawyers emphasized her commitment to sobriety, therapy, and living with her son and mother in Massachusetts. Her mother, Nancy Eckersley, requested leniency from the court, describing the newfound happiness and fulfillment that her daughter and grandson have brought her family. Eckersley’s legal team argued that she thought her son had died after birth and called 911 for help.
The verdict stems from Eckersley’s difficult journey, living in a tent in New Hampshire and encountering a medical emergency while giving birth on Christmas night in 2022. Despite the challenges, her family expressed shock over her arrest and took responsibility for not being able to provide adequate support due to her lifelong mental health struggles. Ultimately, Eckersley’s suspended sentence comes with the hope that she will continue treatment and move forward positively with her life.
