Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has deployed officials to the southern border in Texas to warn migrants that the state’s shelters are full as it struggles to accommodate the high numbers of arrivals. Officials from the state are connecting with federal agencies, NGOs, and migrant families to educate them about the lack of shelter availability in Massachusetts. The officials will visit various locations in Texas, including airports, migrant shelters, and migrant welcome centers to relay this message.
Gov. Healey’s administration has declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard to provide services, implementing a nine-month limit on stays in emergency shelters. Despite the welcoming approach, Massachusetts has faced challenges in handling the influx of migrants, with more than 2.4 million migrant encounters in FY23. Some migrants have been bussed to sanctuary cities by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
Democratic-run states and cities across the US have struggled with the increasing number of migrants and have called for more federal funding and expedited work permits to help migrants become self-sufficient more quickly. Gov. Healey has emphasized the state’s welcoming stance, but the pressure remains high, with more than 100 migrants seen sleeping on the floors of Boston’s Logan International Airport due to overcrowded shelters.
Healey’s office has prioritized work authorizations, job training, English classes, and rehousing assistance for migrants. The state has helped thousands of migrants apply for work authorization and enroll in English classes. Despite the challenges, Massachusetts continues to extend a welcoming hand to migrants in need.
