Boston University and Harvard faced off in an exhibition men’s hockey game that felt like a regular-season matchup, drawing in over 5,700 fans at Agganis Arena. Both teams saw it as a valuable opportunity to play on consecutive nights, with Harvard coming off a win against the US National Team Development Program and BU starting with a 4-2 victory over UConn.
Despite the exhibition label, both teams played hard and skated to a 2-2 draw. Harvard coach Ted Donato praised the experience as a great learning opportunity for his squad, which includes a talented freshman class. BU used the game to test different player combinations and give less experienced players more ice time.
The game was just the beginning of what could be at least two meetings this season, with the schools set to face off in the Beanpot in February and possibly in the Friendship Four in Belfast. Overall, the early season for Hockey East teams saw exciting matchups, with Maine, Providence, and UMass Lowell all securing weekend sweeps.
In other notable games, Boston College honored two late alumni with a dominant 5-0 win, AIC continued their rigorous schedule, and UMass Lowell improved to 3-1 with two wins over Colgate. The season is off to an exciting start, with Hockey East teams maintaining a strong .632 winning percentage against nonconference opponents.
