Former Doctor at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison
Sujan Kayastha, a former doctor at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping a teenage boy in 2018. The 42-year-old Dartmouth resident was found guilty of rape of a child aggravated by age difference, electronic enticement of a child for commercial sex, possession of child pornography, posing a child in the nude, and sending obscene matter to a child.
Prosecutors revealed that Kayastha met the 14-year-old boy online in September 2018 and exchanged nude photographs and videos with him. In December 2018, he drove the boy, who lived in a group home in Attleboro, to a motel in Seekonk and paid him $200 to engage in a sex act.
The staff member at the group home became suspicious and contacted the police, leading to Kayastha’s arrest. Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn described Kayastha’s conduct as extremely disturbing and predatory, preying on a vulnerable teenager.
After being convicted, Kayastha was immediately sentenced to 12 years in a state prison, followed by five years of supervised probation upon his release. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and holding perpetrators of such heinous crimes accountable for their actions.
