Former Lithuanian president warns that if the West capitulates, Putin will have room to plan new acts of aggression.

Former Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė has warned that Russia remains a constant threat to Europe under Vladimir Putin. In an interview with Euronews, Grybauskaitė called for greater investment in the defence industry and emphasized the importance of a pro-European, pro-NATO, and pro-Ukrainian stance.

As Lithuania heads towards forming a new government, Grybauskaitė stated that her country will continue to be a responsible partner for the EU and Ukraine. In the recent legislative elections, the centre-left Social Democratic Party is in the lead, with the runoff vote scheduled for 27 October.

Grybauskaitė highlighted the importance of internal security in Lithuania, as the country lies on NATO and the EU’s eastern flank. She warned against allowing Russia to maintain occupied territories in Ukraine, as it would only give Moscow time to gear up for new aggression against neighbouring countries, including the Baltic States.

The former Lithuanian president also discussed the impact of the upcoming US elections on relations with Russia and new challenges for the EU. She stressed the need for Europe to rapidly invest in the defence industry, build military capabilities, and streamline decision-making processes.

Grybauskaitė’s comments were made during the Estoril Conferences in Portugal, where she participated in a panel on diplomacy and international cooperation along with former leaders from Mongolia and Tunisia. As Europe faces ongoing threats from Russia, Grybauskaitė’s calls for increased defence investment and unity in the face of aggression are particularly timely.
