Press Release: Local Soccer and Field Hockey Playoffs Showcase Intense Competition
In an exciting day of high school soccer, several teams advanced to the next rounds of their respective state tournaments. Mitchell Kisgen scored the only goal for No. 14 Xaverian, leading them to a narrow 1-0 victory over No. 22 Franklin in a Div. 1 quarterfinal. No. 8 St. John’s (Shrewsbury) triumphed 3-0 against No. 17 Ludlow, with Will Baltas contributing a goal and an assist. Meanwhile, Ross Toma’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 win for No. 31 Newton North against No. 7 Natick.
In Div. 2 action, second-seeded Mansfield advanced by defeating No. 7 Wayland, 2-0. Similarly, No. 2 Dover-Sherborn claimed a late-game victory over No. 10 Holliston with a 2-1 scoreline, while No. 3 Medfield edged No. 6 North Reading by the same margin.
The girls’ soccer playoffs also produced thrilling results. Top-seeded Norwell impressed with a 3-0 win over No. 8 Pope Francis, and No. 2 Medfield outlasted No. 7 Danvers in a high-scoring affair, 5-3. In the Div. 4 quarterfinals, No. 2 Hamilton-Wenham dispatched No. 7 South Hadley 3-2 in double overtime, while Tess Barrett’s late goal propelled No. 4 Cohasset to a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Littleton.
In field hockey, No. 2 Somerset Berkley secured a place in the Div. 2 state final with a solid 4-2 win over No. 6 Hingham.
