Coastal Flood Advisory for 7 Massachusetts Counties in Effect Until Thursday Afternoon

Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Massachusetts Regions

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a coastal flood statement effective Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for several Massachusetts counties, including Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket. The statement warns of potential flooding, projecting up to half a foot of inundation in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waters.

Current conditions report that while roads remain passable, various coastal roads—especially along the North Shore stretching from Salem and Gloucester to Newburyport—are experiencing shallow flooding affecting visibility and accessibility. The NWS cautions residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways, especially as rough surf conditions are expected to create splashover near high tide.

Residents are reminded to understand the severity of flood-related alerts. A flash flood warning indicates imminent danger requiring immediate action, while a flood warning suggests that flooding is either expected or ongoing. Flood advisories signal that minor flooding is possible, and a flood watch warns of favorable conditions for flooding.

In light of the expected weather, the NWS urges those in flood-prone areas to take necessary safety precautions. Recommendations include moving to higher ground, following evacuation orders, and avoiding low-lying areas. It’s critical not to enter floodwaters or walk through them as even small amounts of fast-moving water can be dangerous.

As heavy rainfall is anticipated, the NWS encourages drivers to exercise caution by adhering to safety guidelines like maintaining a safe distance from vehicles, reducing speed, and being especially vigilant of slippery road conditions. Staying informed and prepared is crucial to ensuring safety during adverse weather.
