Fairhaven Edges Lynnfield in Overtime Led by Marques – Boston Herald

Fairhaven Blue Devils Triumph in Overtime, Setting New Touchdown Record

FAIRHAVEN – In a thrilling conclusion to an intense Division 6 Elite Eight playoff game, the Fairhaven Blue Devils defeated Lynnfield 36-34 in overtime, securing their place in the next round while also celebrating a historic achievement. Senior Justin Marques, who entered the game needing touchdowns to break the state record, not only scored a game-high four touchdowns but also made a pivotal interception that sealed the victory.

Marques’ third touchdown during the match marked a career milestone, eclipsing the all-time state touchdown record with 102 scores, previously held by Ryan Izzo since 2010. He finished the game with an impressive 190 yards on 39 carries. Reflecting on the achievement, Marques emphasized the collective effort of his teammates, stating, “I don’t think it’s a ‘me’ record – I think it’s a ‘we’ record.”

The game was marked by high drama, especially as it approached its final moments. With just 2:43 left in regulation and the game tied 28-28, Fairhaven’s decision to attempt a risky fourth down play nearly ended their hopes. However, some last-minute heroics from senior quarterback Tyler Adamo, who amassed 269 passing yards, set up a field goal attempt that ultimately sent the game to overtime after missing wide left.

In overtime, Marques scored to give Fairhaven the lead before quarterback Cameron Burke converted a vital two-point attempt. Coach Derek Almeida praised Marques’ leadership, expressing gratitude for his contributions both on and off the field.

The Blue Devils now look forward to continued success, hoping to build on this momentum in the next round against the winner of the Swampscott-Stoneham matchup.
