Two wild, untrained emus named Thelma and Louise wreak havoc in South Carolina

Two emus named Thelma and Louise escaped from their home in Loris, South Carolina about three months ago. The owner, Sam Morace, is working with law enforcement to tranquilize and recapture them, but they are still at large. The Horry County Police Department is aware of the situation and is assisting in the effort to locate the missing birds. Despite recent sightings of the emus in Green Sea, authorities have stated that there is no risk to the community at this time. This incident comes after 43 monkeys escaped from a primate research facility weeks ago, and efforts to recapture them are ongoing.

Morace confirmed in a Facebook post that the runaway emus are “feral and not trained” like the ones kept at her house. She explained that local law enforcement is helping with the situation and is trying to get approval for tranquilizers to safely capture the birds. The community has shown support and offered suggestions to aid in the recapture of Thelma and Louise.

Emus are flightless birds native to Australia and are not considered a threat to the community. Thelma and Louise’s escape was reportedly due to a failed attempt to move one of them to another paddock. The large birds can stand over 5 1/2 feet tall and weigh more than 130 pounds. Despite their size, efforts are being made to safely bring them back home.
